So, despite a sprained ankle…the result of showing off on a kids climbing wall, and a badly bruised coccyx, having fallen off my acro balancing partners feet, this month is proving rather developmental…with the emphasis on ‘mental’.

I have been introducing the Lyra to some of my classes, really to give a little light relief from the effort of hauling oneself up and down a silk. Whilst the hoop is more painful in some respects, it is easier to pull up on , and with the basic aerial vocabulary that most of us have now, playing in the hoop is really rather fun and constantly inventive, particularly where socks and extra pants are concerned.

Saturday in Exmouth, had my usual clutch of talented enthusiasts, and I had spent bloody ages working on a transition for Mike, which he had seen a colleague do so I dutifully worked on it, and came up with a result, none to attractive but hey, it was an odd one…and no wonder, seems he had noted the move incorrectly so all my efforts in vain (other then to make them all find a more elegant solution!) Still, I did make Mike suffer with a boat climb challenge

Longing to teach a couple of new drops I have been working on, so running 2 workshops on Dec 6th in Bridport, where there is blessed heating and the means to warm mince pies..

Well, during half term I thought I would launch (relatively unceremoniously) into teaching a little lyra (hoop trapeze) and simultaneous silks. In the wake of the ghastly reality TV programme ‘Tumble’ hoop seems to be all the rage. As it was we had enormous fun. I had a birthday party of bouncing 9 year old girls, all keen as mustard, and remarkably stoic about the fact that their hands were rubbed raw and straddling a hoop is akin to hitting the back of your legs with a metal bar! All the girls seemed to take to both disciplines like duck to water, or monkeys to vine more to the point and managed to eat vast amounts of cake afterwards for a birthday tea in the upstairs cafe. My adult classes fared almost as well, but with a little more whinging, but on the upside, the silks now seem comfy in comparison. It was interesting just to see how transferrable the two skills are, and just how much strength all the adults have built up over the past few months, exhilerating.

Ok so last week I popped up to London ostensibly to rehearse with David for the Christmas show, but really to go and muck about with Katie Hardwick on doubles silks ideas…sadly I was completely wiped out after a ‘Cosmo’ night of flailing arms legs and coughing so I was barely able to pull up my own weight let alone Katies’…still, its always energising hanging upside down hauling people up in a straddle split, certainly the pain gets adrenaline pumping at least. From there to see ’7 Fingers’ new show ‘Sequence 8′ at the Peacock Theatre with Katie and Tink (the dream performance) …it was a bit of an Oh Wow..evening, just beautiful, inspiring, exciting and fun. Contemporary circus at its best, I marvel at what the human body is capable of doing (just sadly not mine at this stage in the game). The following morning after struggling through my new Evil Sugar Plum Fairy routine (always embarrassing getting tangled up when training at Circus Space or whatever it is called now), but lucky enough to join in with a couple of the girls thrashing out new hoop moves, and transitions. It seems everyone is being called on to teach hoop following the ghastly TV thing Tumble. Anyway, left with sore hips, a busted knee, bleeding toe and very very happy.

OCTOBER

Having never attempted a ‘blog’ or really any form of social media other then a timid Facebook page and my cabaret website which is so outdated it’s embarrassing – I am not entirely sure what to write here so I thought I would just say a word or two about playing…Nothing is more enjoyable then just hanging about, literally. Putting on some overblown 80′s music, ‘Footloose’ or She’s a Maniac’, something marvellously cringeworthy..and just doing what ever I feel like. Yesterday I was going from crossback to a skinning the cat (whilst in crossback) popping out into some lovely free form flags – oooh I felt like Irene Cara, only slightly older…and then I taught my lovely Monday night intermediate aerial class, and thanks to far too much muscle flexing competitive conditioning I completely cocked up a backdrop out of the ‘Oh so Lovely’ move, having to lower myself down out of a tangle in front of my class - probably just deserts. This afternoon I started the long road to reminding myself of my hoop skills as I intend to start teaching it later this month…and boy do I have a way to go, my hands were shredded in 40 minutes. Sigh.

The Lyra (hoop trapeze) is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its aesthetic appeal and the amount of impressive and attractive poses that can be achieved on it in a relatively short amount of time. It is superb for improving core stability and flexibility. Every class will begin with a warm up which includes specific conditioning relevant to aerial work. These in themselves can be demanding and build up the strength necessary for stamina on the trapeze.
Students will learn how to ascend the hoop in a number of ways, hold poses and find transitions from one to another. As these skills become familiar we move to working with music and sequences and try to find a personal style that suits each individual, and use improvisational skills in putting a ‘routine’ together.

Lessons are held in Beaminster Wantsley Farm, DT8 3PT Friday 5pm..please call for class times and if you want to arrange a session for alternative days. 07958480557

The entrance is on the corner of St Michael’s Lane and Gundry Lane.
